Planning cinematography - Miss Georgiou

Planning cinematography

Cinematography is essential within a music video as It allows the audience to establish the artists location within a video and allows the artist to be represented to the audience in certain ways depending on the camera shot being used. This allows the audience to engage with the music video and build a relationship with the artist.

The first camera shot we want to include in our music video is an establishing shot. We will use this to establish the setting of the music video and therefore allow the audience to understand where it is taking place. We will use this camera shot to show the setting of Brick lane or the house setting, and within this camera shot you will be able to see the artist featured. This will allow the audience to recognise the artist as soon as the music video starts making it intriguing. This camera shot represents our artist as someone who is relateable to the audience as she will be seen in a normal environment which means the artist will be able to relate them to their own life. This camera shot will help the audience to build a relationship with the artist as they will understand the setting more and therefore feel more involved in the video as  they will feel more comfortable with where the artist is.

The next camera shot we are going to include is close up shots. We are going to include close ups of the artists face whilst she is singing the lyrics and when she is in bed with her boyfriend. We are including this shot as we think that the audience will engage with the artist a lot more and feel more involved as they will be able to see the artists emotions, therefore meaning that they will be able to relate to them a lot more. This shot is conventional to the soul genre as it portrays the artists emotion to the audience which shows that what they are singing about is personal as they are getting emotional meaning that their song is about past experiences. This shot represents our artist as very emotional and vulnerable as audiences will be able to see her emotion and see her getting upset over her past relationships meaning that the artist is seen to be weak. This therefore helps the audience build a relationship with the artist through this camera shot as they will feel they can relate to the artist a lot more if they can see what she is feeling.

The next camera shot we are going to include is a birds eye view shot. We are going to include this when the artist is laying in bed with her boyfriend, we are going to include this so that the audience will feel they are seeing the full picture and have a better understanding of the situation between the artist and her boyfriend. This is going to help the audience build a relationship with the artist as they will feel they are more involved in what's happening in the video and gaining an insight into the artist. This shot is conventional as its a birds eye view audiences will see a clear divide between the artist and her partner representing her as emotional and relationship focused as it will show that the song is about how lonely she is after the breakup.

The next camera shot we are going to include is an over the shoulder shot. We are going to include this when the artist is sitting at the dressing table doing her hair and makeup. We decided to include this shot as it quite a creative shot but it will also show off the dressing table nicely as the dressing table has a vintage vibe which is what we want our artists style to portray. This shot represents the artist as unique and vintage but also emotional as she is seen sitting at a vintage looking dressing table but the audience are still able to see her facial expressions in the mirror showing her getting upset. This will create a relationship between the audience and artist as they will be able to see her facial expressions and therefore feel more engaged in the video as they can relate to how she is feeling. This is conventional to the soul genre as it shows the artists emotions making the song more personal to them.

Finally the last camera shot we are going to include is a handheld shot. We are going to use this shot when the artist is having flashbacks to her past relationship, we are going to have a handheld camera shot during this time as it shows that it is a flashback but also makes it more personal to the artist. This camera shot is conventional as it makes the video more personal to the artist if it looks as if the artist is holding the camera. This shot helps to represent the artist as a normal relateable person as audiences will feel more involved in what's happening and feel as if they are experiencing the flashback with her. This will mean there will be a relationship built between the two as the audience will feel they have an insight into what the artist is like.

  1. This post demonstrates some planning techniques. You have considered the purpose of cinematography elements well and have focused on the effect that you will want to create well. However, you also need to consider the conventions of soul, to support the points that you have made.

Now you need to relate your explanations back to your lyrics, to demonstrate further understanding of why you have selected to use certain shots in your production.
