Lyric analysis - Miss Georgiou

Lyric analysis
(Only love can hurt like this - Paloma Faith)

The song describes what could happen if you make a silly mistake during a relationship and watching the other person move on in life without you there with them. The pain of being in love with them still and having to see them leave you causes a pain that can only be considered as a pain from loving someone- in this song the greatest pain of all is love. The song is about heartbreak and the greatest pain - love.

We annotated our lyrics by what we thought they meant and their meaning. This would later on help us when we went to make our music video as we could portray Goodwin's theory through the lyrics matching the visuals. This way we can portray what Paloma is talking about in her lyrics. We also annotated the lyrics and pointed out which parts of the lyrics we would want to focus on portraying in the music video.

Our annotations will assist us when planning the micro elements as we have decided our setting will be based around Brick Lane and Camden. We believe this would be conventional to the soul genre and would be easy to portray the lyrics and meaning of the song as they are quite alternative settings and will therefore portray the soul genre as it is emotional and alternative. Our annotations will also assist us when we are planning our style as the lyrics are about love and relationships which therefore means the style of our music video will be based around love and relationships too to portray the lyrics to the audience, also our annotated lyrics has helped us identify who our target audience will be as they will be people who have been in relationships before and who have been hurt. We identified this from our lyrics as the lyrics are about this too and the effect and pain of a breakup. This song would appeal to this audience as they would be able to relate to the artist and what they are saying in the lyrics and therefore engage in the song more. The lyric analysis will assist in planning our conventions of our music video as love/soul songs usually include a couple in the video which we will include and various aspects of a relationship being shown in the video which we will portray and how the relationship broke down. This is conventional to the soul genre as it shows that the artist is emotional and that the song is about past experiences in her life which the audience will be able to relate to.

Annotating our lyrics has helped us plan what we are going to include in our music video and help us to portray the meaning the most. We are going to have close ups of the artist when she is singing "only love can hurt like this" as it will show to the audience that the artist is emotional about the song and that it is being related to one of her past experiences. Also when the artist sings "I'm begging you to stay" we are going to have the artist looking at pictures of her past relationship and her getting upset and emotional in bed by herself, this will portray the lyrics and include Goodwin's theory of a link between lyrics and visuals. We are going to have the location of Camden/Brick Lane whilst she is singing the first verse as they are busy places and this will emphasis the fact that she is alone and hurt by this relationship. We are going to have the artist looking back at old pictures of her relationship and flashbacks of her being happy when she sings "must have been a a deadly kiss only love can hurt like this" and have the couple kissing. This will portray the soul genre to the audience as it emphasises the artists emotion and how she is relating it back to real life past relationships she has had. We are going to include close ups of the artist whilst she is singing the chorus too as the audience will be able to see her facial expressions and emotion whilst singing the song making it more heartfelt for the audience as they will be able to tell what the artist is feeling in the song.

  1. You have made a start in considering the hidden meanings of your chosen song and it is clear to see that you have considered a narrative for your production. However, the narrative needs to be explored in a lot more detail, by explaining what will be seen, the style of the production, explanation of how you will follow the dance conventions and how your production will appeal to your target audience.
