Digipak Analysis - Miss Miller

Digipak Analysis
A digipak is a type of packaging for CDs or DVDs, typically made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more discs. Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold paperboard or cardboard outer binding, with one or more plastic trays for the CD. Digipak style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums. Digipak usually contain a letter from the artist directly to the fans giving it a more personal feel when a CD case only includes the lyrics of the songs which makes it more relatable for the audience. Also Digipak's usually include bonus tracks, they are more long lasting and very easily accessible where as a CD case only includes the songs from the album. The digipak i am looking at are Lana Del Reys for her album Born To Die.

The colours used in the digipak are mainly white, red and blue. White is mainly used for the background of all of the writing and the CD disc, this shows the artists innocence and purity as the digipak looks clean and exclusive making it appeal to a wider audience. Also the colour white is the colour of the artists shirt white shows she is pure and innocent, this portrays the artist as unique and individual and can therefore appeal to a wider audience. Blue is also seen in the digipak as the colour of the album title and the songs on the back and the blue sky background. Blue is a very common colour which makes it more relateable to the audience as although the artist is showing her individuality through her style it is still relateable to audiences. Red is also included on the roses on the CD disc, this could symbolise the theme of love and relationships which gives the audience an insight into what the album might be about. This is conventional to the soul genre as the colour red symbolises how her music is personal to her and her past experiences and white and blue are conventional as it shows that the artist is pure and innocent making her more relateable to audiences.

The design layout shows the artist directly in the middle of the front cover with her eyesight looking straight forward. This shows that she is the most important part of the digipak as she is placed dead centre. Also, the fact that she is looking straight at the audience shows that she is very confident and proud of her work as she is not looking away or being shy. This is conventional to the soul genre as it shows that the artist is proud of her work which shows that the artist has created the music as something they want to be noticed for and is something shes proud of. Also the artists name and album title are on the front cover alongside the picture of the artist. The effect of this is that it will attract audiences who recognise the artists name or the album and therefore help to have a wider target audience. This is conventional to the soul genre as it shows that the artist is proud of her work as her name is the main writing.

The choice of image on the digipak is a picture of the artist looking straight at the audience with a blunt expression. This shows that the artist is proud of her work as she is being serious about her album and also shows that she is professional. Also the artist's hair and make up are perfectly done and very precise showing that she is a perfectionist which may portray what her music is like.

The typography used includes a bold capital letter font which stands out from the rest of the cover. This grabs audiences attention as they would recognise the artist or the album name. The writing stands out from the rest of the cover as the style of font is clear and easy to read making it more appealing for audiences. The same font is used on the back of the digipak to write the song names, the clear easy to read font makes it more appealing to audiences as they would be able to recognise song names that they might already know.

Overall after analysing Lana Del Rey's digipak i have taken some ideas from it which i will include when planning our own. I am going to make sure we include a big bold title of the artists name to attract audiences who will recognise the name, also with the layout i am going to include a large picture of the artist looking directly at the cinema, dead centre. Therefore, this will mean that our artist will look confident and proud of her music she has created making it more appealing to audiences.

Planning cinematography - Miss Georgiou

Planning cinematography

Cinematography is essential within a music video as It allows the audience to establish the artists location within a video and allows the artist to be represented to the audience in certain ways depending on the camera shot being used. This allows the audience to engage with the music video and build a relationship with the artist.

The first camera shot we want to include in our music video is an establishing shot. We will use this to establish the setting of the music video and therefore allow the audience to understand where it is taking place. We will use this camera shot to show the setting of Brick lane or the house setting, and within this camera shot you will be able to see the artist featured. This will allow the audience to recognise the artist as soon as the music video starts making it intriguing. This camera shot represents our artist as someone who is relateable to the audience as she will be seen in a normal environment which means the artist will be able to relate them to their own life. This camera shot will help the audience to build a relationship with the artist as they will understand the setting more and therefore feel more involved in the video as  they will feel more comfortable with where the artist is.

The next camera shot we are going to include is close up shots. We are going to include close ups of the artists face whilst she is singing the lyrics and when she is in bed with her boyfriend. We are including this shot as we think that the audience will engage with the artist a lot more and feel more involved as they will be able to see the artists emotions, therefore meaning that they will be able to relate to them a lot more. This shot is conventional to the soul genre as it portrays the artists emotion to the audience which shows that what they are singing about is personal as they are getting emotional meaning that their song is about past experiences. This shot represents our artist as very emotional and vulnerable as audiences will be able to see her emotion and see her getting upset over her past relationships meaning that the artist is seen to be weak. This therefore helps the audience build a relationship with the artist through this camera shot as they will feel they can relate to the artist a lot more if they can see what she is feeling.

The next camera shot we are going to include is a birds eye view shot. We are going to include this when the artist is laying in bed with her boyfriend, we are going to include this so that the audience will feel they are seeing the full picture and have a better understanding of the situation between the artist and her boyfriend. This is going to help the audience build a relationship with the artist as they will feel they are more involved in what's happening in the video and gaining an insight into the artist. This shot is conventional as its a birds eye view audiences will see a clear divide between the artist and her partner representing her as emotional and relationship focused as it will show that the song is about how lonely she is after the breakup.

The next camera shot we are going to include is an over the shoulder shot. We are going to include this when the artist is sitting at the dressing table doing her hair and makeup. We decided to include this shot as it quite a creative shot but it will also show off the dressing table nicely as the dressing table has a vintage vibe which is what we want our artists style to portray. This shot represents the artist as unique and vintage but also emotional as she is seen sitting at a vintage looking dressing table but the audience are still able to see her facial expressions in the mirror showing her getting upset. This will create a relationship between the audience and artist as they will be able to see her facial expressions and therefore feel more engaged in the video as they can relate to how she is feeling. This is conventional to the soul genre as it shows the artists emotions making the song more personal to them.

Finally the last camera shot we are going to include is a handheld shot. We are going to use this shot when the artist is having flashbacks to her past relationship, we are going to have a handheld camera shot during this time as it shows that it is a flashback but also makes it more personal to the artist. This camera shot is conventional as it makes the video more personal to the artist if it looks as if the artist is holding the camera. This shot helps to represent the artist as a normal relateable person as audiences will feel more involved in what's happening and feel as if they are experiencing the flashback with her. This will mean there will be a relationship built between the two as the audience will feel they have an insight into what the artist is like.

Planning setting and iconography - Miss Georgiou

Planning setting and iconography
Locations and iconography are important within a music video as they establish the setting for the audience and make the music video more realistic for the audience to watch as the iconography adds to the effect of the video. The locations encourage the audience to continue watching as an interesting location can engage the audience and encourage them to continue watching.

Setting - House
We have chosen the location of a house where we will film in the bedroom and bathroom. We have decided to choose this location as we feel it would be easy to film in and it portrays the idea of love which is what our song is about as bedrooms portray the idea and concept of love and relationships. This conveys the message about our artist as it shows that she is down to earth as she is in an everyday setting which means that the audience will be able to relate to what is happening.

Within this setting we are going to film in the bed, by the dressing table and in the bath. We will film the artist in the bed with a man, getting dressed and doing her makeup by the dressing table and in the bath looking at pictures of her past relationship.

The limitations of this setting are the fact that if the rooms are small in the house then it means we may not be able to set up the camera properly which would mean that we would struggle when filming. Other than this issue we haven't really got anymore limitations of this setting.

Health and safety risks that we may face in this location is we may drop the camera whilst we are in the house as some rooms may be small with everyone in whilst filming and make it difficult. We will overcome this problem by making sure not all of our filming team are in the same room so that we have more room to film.

The weather won't effect us whilst filming in this setting as the location is inside.

Setting - Camden/Brick Lane
We have chosen the location of Camden/Brick Lane as we think this will show how quirky as different the artist is and express her personality through the setting. As both locations are iconic quirky  places this will represent the artists personality and allow the audience to have an insight into the artist and her image. The fact that the locations are quirky and are seen to be 'different' this will portray the soul genre as it'll show the artists individuality which soul music is meant to represent. The audience will be able to relate to the artist more from this setting as they are relatable settings and they will be able to imagine themselves in the same situation.

We are going to plan to film with a graffiti background whilst the artist is singing. This will portray the artist as individual and show her quirkiness as it is a unique setting. This will show the soul genre as the setting is personal and different compared to other settings in other music videos. We are going to include flashbacks of the artist being happy in past relationships in this setting to make the setting more personal to the artist. We are going to include close ups of the artist whilst she is singing which will show her emotions to the audience and make the setting more personal and allow the audience to engage with the artist and see her emotions.

We are limited in what we can do in this setting as we are in the public and can't take up a whole place on the street to film, therefore we need to make sure we don't waste time when filming and make sure we film appropriately and make sure we are respectful to society and public.

Health and safety risks involved whilst filming in this setting would be because we are filming in public there may be bystanders and other elements may affect our filming.

Bad weather such as snow, rain and bad winds may effect our filming as it'll be difficult to film and ruin our shots. Therefore we will make sure we film on days when the weather is good so we don't have to worry about the weather effecting our filming.

Iconography - Bath tub
We have chosen to use a bath tub in our music video when we are filming in a house setting. We have chosen this piece of iconography as it'll be used when the artist is in the bath looking at old pictures of her past relationship getting emotional trying to wash away her memories. This is conventional to the soul genre as it shows that the artist is getting emotional which is conventional as soul music is emotional.

Iconography - Bed
We have chosen a bed as it symbolises relationships and love as this is what our song is about. The artist is going to be seen in bed with her past boyfriend getting emotional. The artist going to be portrayed as vulnerable and emotional and being in a bed with her ex boyfriend will emphasise her loneliness. There will be a birds eye view of the couple and this will be conventional as it shows the normality and how relatable the couple are.

Iconography - Dressing table
We have chosen this feminine vintage dressing table as we think it'll show the artists personality and style of being vintage, unique and different. There will be an over the shoulder shot of the artist doing her makeup in her underwear looking into the mirror getting emotional. This will show to the audience that the artist is relatable but also unique and emphasise her loneliness as she is looking at herself and trying to forget her bad memories. This is conventional to the soul genre as it shows that the artist is unique and shows her individuality.

Magazine advert analysis - Miss Miller

Magazine Advert Analysis
The purpose of a magazine advert is to advertise the artists new album to the audience. This allows the audience to find out about new albums and releases and brings publicity to the artist. The purpose of advertising in a magazine is to attract a wider audience and create convergence, this would therefore increase sales of the album as different types of audiences will view the album and buy it which will consequently increase sales of the album. A magazine advert also allows the artist to get support from other companies that could push sales further and also links in with other advertisements of the album to create for marketing for the artist. A magazine advert allows the audience to see a representation of the artist that the artist wants the audience wants themselves to be viewed as. A magazine advert also allows the audience to find out about information about the artist such as new singles, the release date and extras included in the album. I have looked at Paloma Faith's album magazine advert and Adele's album magazine advert.

Adele's magazine advert for her album portrays her to be quite shy but serious about her music. The colours used in the advert are black and white and light green on some of the writing. Black and white are seen to be quite classic colours and aren't bold or in the audience's face. This shows that Adele is serious about her music as the advert is all black and white meaning that the title of her album 'Adele 21' is the main focus meaning that her music is the most important aspect of her career as the writing is what we are drawn to look at straight away when we look at the poster. The positioning of Adele is slightly off screen with her looking down. This shows that she is not interested in her look but that her music is the most important thing rather than her appearance, this also shows Adele looking quite sad and emotional. This could mean that she is portraying her music as emotional too from her facial expression. There is also a small picture of what the album is going to look like in the left hand bottom corner, her facial expression in this is looking down again with her hand by her head. This emphasises the point from the main image that she is emotional and sad. Only half of Adele's face is seen in the main image, this shows that she is being modest about her work and isn't bragging about her success at all. Also as she is a successful artist audience's will be able to recognise her from what they can see in the picture without having to have her the main focus in the advert. The font being used is quite basic. This makes it clear to read and is eye catching also as it is in capital letters and a clear font is being used. This makes it appealing for consumers as they will remember the name of the album as it is clear as is the first thing their eyes are drawn to. Overall this magazine advert is conventional to the soul genre as it portrays the artist as weak, emotional and vulnerable and this would make audiences think these themes such as heartbreak will be explored through her music.

Paloma Faith's magazine album advert portrays her as quirky and different as the different images of her in the advert shows that she has different aspects to herself and possibly her music. She is represented as confident as there are many different images of her, this may suggest that the characters she is playing may have influenced her music or may have some sort of involvement. Paloma is also portrayed as quite sexual as two of the characters she is portraying herself as, are exposing her body in sexual ways.
There are many different colours being used in the advert but the main colour that stands out to me is the background colour gold. Gold connotes the idea of money and being successful which means that Paloma is using this colour to show the success of her career. Also another big colour being used in the advert is the red of her hair, red connotes passion, love and relationships. This shows that her music is going to be based around these things and also explores her unique side as her hair colour is very bright and 'different' which shows that she is a unique artist. Also the colour of the material covering her naked body is white which shows her innocence and purity which portrays her as an individual. All the colours used helps the audience to understand the artist more and about her personality. The main focus on the poster is Paloma dressed up as different characters, she is places right in the middle of the advert which shows that she is the most important thing and the main focus should be on her this is conventional to the soul genre as soul music is about the artists own personal experiences and should express their personality. Also Paloma is portrayed an attractive person as her hair and make up compliment her and make her look attractive to audiences. She also looks well groomed which shows she has money as she can look after her image which shows she is a successful artist. The font in the advert is in a vintage style this portrays the artists personality as Paloma is seen to be quite individual and vintage. The writing is clear to read which means consumers will read it clearly and have their eyes drawn to what it says as it stands out. The font is in white which makes it stand out from the rest of the advert making the text grab consumers attention which would lead to them buying the album. The album advert overall portrays Paloma's personality of being unique and different which is conventional to the soul genre as soul music is meant to be about artists own personal life experiences and to express their personality.

Overall analysing both magazine adverts has helped me learn what to include when making my own magazine advert for my artists album. I am going to make sure that my advert portrays the artists personality and what their music is like, therefore the audiences will get a better understanding of my artist and an insight into their personality.

Planning artist image - Miss Georgiou

Planning artist image
A representation of an artist is important within a music video as it portrays to the audience what the artist is like, it shows that type of image they are trying to portray of themselves. It allows the audience to have a better understanding of the artist and their personality as it is being portrayed within the music video.

The costumes we are going to have the artist wear in our music video are going to include a look where the artist is portraying a vintage style. She is going to be seen wearing a big vintage black hat and a vintage dress with her hair all curly and messy, also her makeup is going to be subtle with red lipstick and heavy eye makeup. This is going to portray the conventions of the soul genre as the artist is going to look vintage and unique which shows that her music is personal and unique to her as her look portrays her music. This image will help to portray the artist in a unique and personal way as it shows that her style and taste is unique to her and that no one else has the same taste and music as her.

Also within the music video we are going to include the artist wearing her underwear with a silk dressing gown when she is her bedroom, at the dressing table and around the house setting. she is going to have messy hair and minimal make-up. This look will show that the artist is laid back and comfortable in her setting and with herself and shows that she is independent. This look is conventional to the soul genre as being in her underwear connotes the theme of love and relationships which is conventional as soul music is mainly about past relationships. This image helps to represent the artist as vulnerable and emotional as her outfit represents her interest in her past relationships and portraying them through her music videos.

The audience can build a relationship with the artist through the image we have created as the images portray the artist as being unique and quirky which shows she is relateable to audiences. Audiences can relate to the artist through her image as she is seen to be more accessible to audiences as they may aspire to be like her and her style. This would therefore build a relationship between the artist and target audience as the target audience are males and females aged 16-40, therefore the unique vintage image the artist is portraying would appeal to this target audience as her look portrays the soul genre.
