Planning Editing Styles - Miss Georgiou

Planning Editing Styles
A variety of editing styles are essential within a music video as they keep the audience engaged in whats happening. This is from the editing styles keeping the music video more interesting as it keeps the audience  much more engaged. It makes the music video much more engaging for the audience as rather the video being one long continuous shot which would be boring to watch, it means that there's a variety of shots being used. By simply adding cuts and transitions within a music video it allows and helps the audience to gain a good understanding of the narrative, be able to see the artist clearly in the video and understand the concept. We are going to be editing our music video using Final Cut Pro to add effects, cuts and allow us to time our music video making it a better visual experience for our audience. The main three editing styles we are going to use within our music video Only Love Can Hurt Like This are: slow paced editing, flashback and jump cuts.

The main editing style we are going to use is slow paced editing as our song is from the soul genre and is mainly about emotions and heartache which would make slow paced editing appropriate. Slow paced editing would allow each shot to flow from each other smoothly as it would emit a relaxed atmosphere to the audience which would promote the feeling and mood of the video. We aim to include this editing style as it is conventional to the soul genre as soul music is usually slow paced which therefore is reflected within the editing used. It portrays the soul genre as it gets the audience to engage with what's happening as the editing is not fast which means the audience will have time to think about what they are seeing in the video. This therefore allows the audience to build a relationship with the artist as the audience will then feel more involved in the video as they have time to be thinking about the artists emotions and the storyline within the video. This editing style represents my artist as emotional and hurt as the slow paced editing allows the audience to really view the artist and see her emotions and how she is feeling within the video. This therefore adds to the meaning and purpose of the song which continuously portrays the artist and emotional and hurt.

The next editing style we are going to use are flashbacks. We are going to use these when the artist is looking back at her past relationship and reminiscing on the happy times she had. We feel that using this editing style will help the audience to really engage more in the music video, as it will make the narrative a lot clearer and also allow them to gain an insight into why the artist is feeling the way she is in the video. This will then make them more interested in the music video as they are seeing a different side to the artist and seeing them in a different light which will intrigue them. They will also build a relationship with the artist as they will be seeing everything that the artist is seeing and see what they have gone through in the past allowing them to share the same emotions. This editing style represents our artist is emotional and sad as it shows the artist constantly looking back into the past at when she was happy which will contrast to her emotions at the present. This editing style is conventional to the soul genre as it shows the artist being distraught from her past experiences which is conventional as soul artist's music is usually based on their past real life experiences.

The last main editing style we are going to include is a jumpcut. Jumpcuts are going to be used throughout the music video as it will join two different shots together and allow the music video to run smoothly. Jump cuts allow our target audience to build a relationship with the artist as they will join all the different shots together, therefore showing different scenes and clips to the audience of the artist. This would therefore mean they will build a relationship with the artist as they will have a better understanding of how the artist is feeling as the audience will see the artist in many different clips. This editing style is conventional to the soul genre as it shows that what she is singing about is overwhelming as it follows her everywhere she goes as the editing technique shows the artist in various different locations showing that the topic of the song is very important to her as she thinks about it all the time. This therefore represents the artist as emotional and in touch with her feelings as it shows her emotions are following her round throughout the video.

  1. This post demonstrates proficient planning techniques, which is evident through the different editing styles that you have selected to include within your music video. It is clear to see that you have considered the conventions of soul and how you would like to build a relationship with your target audience.

Aim to relate your examples back to the lyrics of your song, to demonstrate further planning techniques of why you have decided to include certain styles within your production.
