History Of A Music Video

It was first launched on August 1, 1981; 32 years ago, and as of August 2013,  97,654,000 American homes (85.51% of households with television) receive MTV and was the first music channel on TV. MTV's first video that was aired was video killed the radio star - The Buggles.

The website contains  user-generated and corporate media video content, including video clips, TV clips, and music videos, and amateur content such as video blogging, short original videos, and educational videos. The most viewed video on the site is Gangnam Style - Psy which has 2,022,376,481.

Music has evolved greatly over the past years and developed a list of popular music genres which are seen in the music videos featured on the website. These genres include: African, Asian, Avant-Garde, Blues, Caribbean, Comedy, Country, Easy Listening, Electronic, Folk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Pop, Rhythm and Blues, Rock, Ska, Other, Exclusions, R&B, Reggae. These genres have developed over the years and YouTube has helped this development as it provides a place for aspiring musicians and artists to create new music and genres.

Youtube's target audience are on average white males aged 45-54 with children. This is not typically the age group that most people would typically think of when they think of youtube's target audience. But recently they have been aiming at the older generation by having more educational and more appealing videos to that age group.

Doing this research will benefit me in creating my own music video as i have now gained background information on them. This will help me as i now have a better understanding of what i should include in my video as i now know how much it would cost to create one and have better knowledge on music channels which would distribute my video once it is created.

  1. You have made a start in considering the ways in which music videos have changed and developed over the years, but you have only focused on the role of MTV and youtube. The points that you have made are also vague and this is because you have not explored your examples in enough detail. This needs to be developed to explore your understanding further.
