Research Into Music Channels - Miss Georgiou


MTV
  1. MTV's target audience is 12-30 year olds. This is because this is the age group who are most likely to watch MTV as they will play music that this age group would listen to. 
  2. MTV plays pop music and mainstream music. This is because their target audience of 12-30 year olds are most interested in these genres of music and will therefore watch MTV as they enjoy this music.
  3. Artists that regularly appear on MTV would include people like: Rihanna, Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Eminem and Justin Bieber. These are artists who belong to the pop genre and create mainstream music, making these artists ideal artists to be featured on MTV as they fit into the genres being show. Therefore these artists would appeal to the target audience as they would enjoy their music as they like pop and mainstream music.
  4. MTV own a large amount of TV channels and radio stations, this means that they have the opportunity to advertise new shows and stations on their other channels meaning that they can make them widely known across different audiences. This would make MTV a lot more widely known and gain a larger target audience as MTV can promote themselves easier through their different media. This would make their music channel more successful as they have a wider knowledge of their music channel. 
  5. The 'TV' part of the logo is written in a graffiti style writing, this is to appeal to their target audience and the logo is very basic and simplistic as it is in black and white. 



KERRANG
1. Kerrang's target audience are teenagers and young adults who are interested in rock music. This is their target audience as these are the types of people who enjoy rock music and therefore makes them the perfect target audience for the channel
2. Kerrang mostly plays heavy metal and rock music on their channel, they play this genre of music as this is what their target audience wants to hear, making it Kerrang's main genre that they play.
3. Artistis that frequently appear on the channel are people like: Green Day, Linkin Park, Asking Alexandria, 30 Seconds To Mars and You Me At Six. These are artists who belong to the rock genre and Kerrang therefore feature these artists as these are artists who the target audience would want to listen to, therefore making the channel more popular if they have artists that the audience want to see.
4. Kerrang own numerous advertising campaigns which help to promote the channel through the website, radio station and magazine. This means that they can target their audience through different types of media and consequently making the music channel much more successful as it appeals to a wider audience.
5. Kerrangs logo appeals to their audience as the font is risky and edgy and the genres of music they play are associated in goth and emo music which are often linked with dark colours. This would appeal to the target audience as the target audience as they are teenagers and young adults and an edgy cool font would appeal to them.

 4MUSIC
1. 4MUSIC's target audience are ages between 16 to 34 year olds. This is their target audience as this is the age group who are interested in the music that they play on the channel, this would make them the target audience as they will be the main age group showing an interest in the channel.
2. 4MUSIC mostly plays music from the charts as this is what their target audience will want to listen to, 4MUSIC play this genre of music as it will attract the audience who listen to this music to the channel.
3. The channel plays music from Ed Sheeran, Will.i.am, Ariana Grande and Lily Allen. These are artists who create chart music making these artists perfect to feature on the music channel as these are the artists their target audience want to be seeing.
4. 4MUSIC advertise their channel through adverts on TV and online, this helps to advertise their channel through different types of media as this would gain their audiences attention as most 16-34 year olds will be watching TV and be online at the times when 4MUSIC is advertising the channel.
5.4MUSIC's logo appeals to their target audience as it is bright and colourful and fun which would appeal to the target audience as they are aged 16-34 making them young and vibrant which means the logo would appeal to them as it shows the music channel is fun.


VIVA
1. VIVA's target audience are ages between 16 to young adults. This is because they enjoy the style of music that VIVA play and therefore makes them the perfect audience for VIVA.
2. VIVA mostly plays popular music, rap music and other popular genres. These styles of music are very popular with 16-young adults meaning that VIVA decide to feature these songs to make their channel more successful.
3. The channel plays music from Rita Ora, DJ Fresh, Rudimental and Sam Smith, these are artists who create popular music and rap music, making them perfect artists to feature in the music channel.
4. VIVA advertise their channel through their different channels that they own, this advertises their channel well to their audience as their target audience are the people who watch the channels meaning that it gets advertised to the right people.
5.the logo appeals to the target audience of primarily teenagers, more so women. The pink bold font, promotes pop as a genre as it is a common colour shown within the genres videos and the slanted text adds a youthful and edgy feel.

KISS
1. KISS's target audience are 15-34 year olds. This music channel appeals to a slightly younger target audience than the others as they play more mainstream music.
2. the channel plays current mainstream music that is in the charts as this is what their target audience want to be listening to.
3. some artists that regularly feature are: AVICII, Rudimental, Calvin Harris and Chase and Status, these are mainstream artists who create mainstream music and therefore appeal to the target audience.
4. The channel advertisies its channel as its got a radio station which means they can globally target their audience.
5. KISS's logo appeals to their audience as the bright colours appeal to the certain age group and would appeal to them as the casual style font portrays the casual style music channel which would appeal to the young people age group.

It was first launched on August 1, 1981; 32 years ago, and as of August 2013,  97,654,000 American homes (85.51% of households with television) receive MTV and was the first music channel on TV. MTV's first video that was aired was video killed the radio star - The Buggles.

The website contains  user-generated and corporate media video content, including video clips, TV clips, and music videos, and amateur content such as video blogging, short original videos, and educational videos. The most viewed video on the site is Gangnam Style - Psy which has 2,022,376,481.














An average music video costs around  $1,000 to $100,000 to make and the list of the production crew and how much on average they would get paid to be a part of creating the music video. Music videos cost a large amount of money to produce as the production company has to pay a

Music has evolved greatly over the past years and developed a list of popular music genres which are seen in the music videos featured on the website. These genres include: African, Asian, Avant-Garde, Blues, Caribbean, Comedy, Country, Easy Listening, Electronic, Folk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Pop, Rhythm and Blues, Rock, Ska, Other, Exclusions, R&B, Reggae. These genres have developed over the years and YouTube has helped this development as it provides a place for aspiring musicians and artists to create new music and genres.

Youtube's target audience are on average white males aged 45-54 with children. This is not typically the age group that most people would typically think of when they think of youtube's target audience. But recently they have been aiming at the older generation by having more educational and more appealing videos to that age group.

Doing this research will benefit me in creating my own music video as i have now gained background information on them. This will help me as i now have a better understanding of what i should include in my video as i now know how much it would cost to create one and have better knowledge on music channels which would distribute my video once it is created.

Katy Perry - California Gurls belongs to the genre of pop music and is sung by Katy Perry and features Snoop Dogg. A music video can have many different purposes including:
- to promote an artist
- portray a representation of the artist
- identify an artist/group
- buy into different lifestyles
- to show different conventions of genres
- to make the audience remember the video
- make a song available to a wide audience
- show more about the artist
- build a relationship with the artist
- understand more about the song.

These are all reasons why an artist would create a music video and the ways it would appeal to different audiences. Katy Perry's music video - California Gurls is a narrative fun video which shows Katy as a figurine on a playing
board going along and saving other girls who are trapped, whilst Snoop Dogg is controlling the game. The video is fun, colourful and girly and appeals to a wide audience. The purpose of this music video is to promote Katy Perry as an artist as she appears within the video throughout as she is the main character, this is done by portraying her in a positive light where young girls may look up to her as a role model. This helps the audience to build a relationship with the artist as they get to gain an insight into Katy's lifestyle and tastes. This is all achieved through the music video as it shows Katy is kind, fun and creative within her video and is fun and enjoyable to watch. 


The style of this music video is narrative as Katy is exploring a surreal candy world where she is surrounded by sweets, cakes and ice cream shown by quick shots which show the singer in different locations in the board game. The video has been edited quickly to show her different costume changes which show the vast journey she is taking within the board game. The purpose of this narrative for this particular song, is that the audience would be able to understand the lyrics and music a lot more as there are visuals which correlate with both making the songs meaning a lot clearer to the audience. 

The codes and conventions which are evident within pop songs are shown within the video such as the main artist is shown frequently throughout by close up camera shots. This is done to promote the artists popularity and to attract audiences to watch the video as they want to see the artist.

This video appeals to different audiences as different portrayals of Katy are seen throughout. For example, when she is laying naked on a cloud. This would attract a male audience to watch the video as they would enjoy seeing her in this portrayal.
